Trump to Meet Mamdani Amid a Tense Diplomatic Week in New York

Trump’s visit comes as world leaders arrive in Manhattan to attend the United Nations General Assembly, which includes an address by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump and Mamdani will sit at the mayor’s official residence on the Upper East Side, in a meeting whose full details have not yet been announced.

City Hall has provided few indications about what will be discussed during the meeting. Mamdani’s office said: “The meeting will focus on issues affecting New York City and its residents.” The White House also confirmed the meeting but provided no additional details, while no public schedule has been announced.

The meeting comes during a politically charged week in New York City, as the annual gathering of world leaders will once again turn Manhattan into a fortress of road closures, motorcades and heightened security measures.

Trump is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Tuesday as part of a busy diplomatic schedule that includes meetings with several foreign leaders. However, Netanyahu’s arrival threatens to present a particularly delicate challenge for Mamdani, who has spent years strongly criticizing Netanyahu and Israel’s conduct in Gaza.

The mayor said last week that he did not plan to join the protests surrounding the gathering, while the New York Police Department is preparing for the event. Mamdani had previously described Netanyahu as a “war criminal” and said he believed that the Israeli prime minister “belongs in The Hague,” referring to the International Criminal Court.
