Xi Jinping in Washington: Summit with Trump Amid Trade and Taiwan Tensions

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Monday that President Xi Jinping will make a state visit to the United States from Wednesday to Friday, during which he will meet U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss bilateral relations and international issues.

The ministry said in a statement that, at Trump’s invitation, Xi will visit the United States from September 23 to 25.

Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said the two presidents would “engage in an in-depth exchange of views on major issues concerning China-U.S. relations, as well as global peace and development.”

He added that China “will work with the United States to enrich the substance of a constructive strategic stability relationship between the two countries, enhance dialogue and cooperation, and appropriately manage differences.”

Washington announced that the leaders of the world’s two largest economies will meet this week in an effort to ease tensions over trade, technology and strategic issues.

Trump is scheduled to welcome his Chinese counterpart at Andrews Air Force Base on Wednesday, with the two leaders set to hold a meeting the following day.

The Chinese vice president had welcomed Trump upon his arrival in Beijing for a state visit last May.

Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday: “I will discuss almost everything with him.”
