Macron Announces Securing Quantities of Liquefied Natural Gas from Qatar

Al-Taj News – French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Wednesday that he had managed to secure quantities of liquefied natural gas from Qatar during his Gulf tour, at a time when he is facing intense pressure in his country following acts of violence and vandalism that accompanied protests over the high cost of living on Saturday.

Macron told reporters in the Qatari capital, “We secured the equivalent of 2 terawatt-hours per month of liquefied natural gas during the winter,” adding, “This was important for us, and will enable us to move forward.”

The French move comes as part of Paris’s efforts to secure energy supplies and diversify its sources, amid energy market disruptions and rising fuel prices, against the backdrop of the US-Israeli war with Iran and tensions that have affected the movement of energy transportation through the Strait of Hormuz.

France and Qatar have a long-standing partnership in the liquefied natural gas sector; in October 2023, French company “TotalEnergies” and “QatarEnergy” announced the signing of two agreements to supply up to 3.5 million tons annually of liquefied natural gas to France for 27 years, with deliveries set to begin in 2026.
