Poll Finds Majorities in the U.S. and Canada Believe Trump Was Wrong in His Trade War

Al-Taj News – A poll showed that a majority of adults in the United States and Canada believe President Donald Trump was wrong to launch his trade war against Canada.

According to a POLITICO poll, only a quarter of American respondents said Trump was right to impose new tariffs on Canada last month, while nearly three-quarters of Canadians supported Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to respond with similar Canadian tariffs on September 8.

The poll found that half of American adults do not believe the tariffs are worth it if they cause prices to rise, including more than a third of those who said they voted for Trump in the 2024 election.

Trump’s most loyal supporters are divided over how he handled a situation that increased tensions with one of the United States’ closest allies. Among Trump voters who identify themselves as part of the “MAGA” movement, 38% said Trump was right to raise tariffs on Canada even if it risked losing congressional races, while 40% said he was right but should have waited until after the midterm elections.

Canadians remain largely on Carney’s side, with the poll results showing that 71% believe Carney was right to impose reciprocal tariffs, while 57% of Canadians support matching Trump’s tariffs, and nearly half of Canadian respondents say Carney should make no trade concessions to Trump.
