Jordan Ranks 11th in the Arab World and 85th Globally by Population

Al-Taj News – The Department of Statistics said that the population of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan reached approximately 12,045,180 people on July 11, 2026, noting that Jordan ranks 11th in the Arab world and 85th globally in terms of population.

The department added, in a statement marking World Population Day, observed on July 11 of each year, that Jordan’s population has increased significantly over the past decades, from approximately 586,000 people in 1952 to 11.937 million at the end of 2025. Projections indicate that the population will reach 12.144 million by the end of 2026.

It explained that Jordan’s current annual population growth rate stands at 1.7%, meaning that the population is projected to double within approximately 40 years.

It noted that population growth rates have varied significantly due to changes in the components of population growth, including fertility, mortality, and net migration.

It indicated that the growth rate declined from 4.4% between the 1979 and 1994 censuses to 2.6% between the 1994 and 2004 censuses, before rising to 5.3% during the period between the 2004 and 2015 censuses, as a result of the political developments in the region and the accompanying influx of large numbers of Syrian refugees since 2011.

According to the department’s data, the population under the age of 15 accounted for 34.2% of the Kingdom’s total population in 2025, compared with 62.1% for the 15–64 age group, which represents the working-age population, while the proportion of the population aged 65 and above stood at 3.7%.

The demographic dependency ratio stood at 61.4% in 2025, while the average household size in the Kingdom declined from 5.4 persons in 2004 to 4.8 persons in 2015.
