Education Ministry Clarifies: Secondary Education Is Now Three Years, but the General Examination Is Not Spread Over Three Years
Al-Taj News – The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development clarified on Tuesday that considering secondary education as three years means that it now includes grades 10, 11 and 12, and does not mean that the General Examination has been extended over three years.
The ministry said, in a clarification of statements made by Minister of Education and Human Resources Development Azmi Mahafzah, that secondary education previously included grades 11 and 12, while grade 10 was part of basic education, before it was incorporated into secondary education under the new system.
Mahafzah had explained to “The Kingdom” program that the “Tawjihi” examination in its previous form had ended, and that the “General Examination” had become designated for admission purposes at higher education institutions, while the secondary education certificate is awarded to the student after successfully completing grade 12 at school.
Under the new system, students study the same core subjects in grades 10 and 11. After passing grade 11, a student may sit for the first part of the General Examination, which includes Arabic, mathematics, Islamic education, and Jordan’s history. These subjects account for 30% of the examination.
Students are not required to take these subjects immediately after grade 11, as they may postpone them until grade 12, according to Mahafzah.
In grade 12, the student chooses specialized subjects related to the academic field and university major they wish to pursue.
Mahafzah confirmed that the Education and Human Resources Development Law defines the “General Examination” as the examination conducted by the ministry in secondary education curricula for the purposes of admission to higher education institutions.
He also confirmed that the secondary education certificate is awarded to the student after successfully completing grade 12 at school, while the General Examination has become designated for admission to higher education institutions.
