Al-Taj News – UNESCO warned in a report published Monday, on the occasion of the “International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists,” of rising rates of impunity in cases involving the killing of journalists, for the first time since 2012.
The report stated that “the global rate of impunity for crimes of killing journalists rose this year by one percentage point to reach 86%.”
This rate had been in continuous decline since 2012, dropping from its peak of 95% to 85% in the year 2024.
The term “impunity” includes killings where investigations led to no results, or those where investigations are still ongoing.
This means that six out of every 7 perpetrators of crimes of killing journalists escape justice.
