Jordan Among 3 Priority Countries in a Global Program by UN Women
Al-Taj News – The Ministerial Committee for Women’s Empowerment, chaired by Minister of Social Development Wafa Bani Mustafa, discussed on Tuesday with United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women Dr. Sima Bahous ways of cooperation in a number of joint programs in the field of supporting and empowering women.
The meeting was attended by the Ministers of Transport and Labor, Nidal Al-Qatamin; Education and Human Resources Development, Dr. Azmi Mahafzah; Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Nancy Namrouqa; Youth Raed Al-Adwan; Health Ibrahim Al-Badour; and Environment Ayman Suleiman, as well as a number of secretaries-general and representatives of partner entities.
Bani Mustafa said that Jordan has made significant progress in legislation and policies in the field of women’s empowerment, advancing their rights and enhancing their economic, political, and social participation, reflecting its commitments to the path of empowering women and enhancing their participation in various areas of public life. She stressed that women’s empowerment is a shared national responsibility that will contribute to achieving comprehensive development and sustainable economic growth.
She reviewed the most prominent achievements made in the area of legislation supporting women’s participation, the development of national policies and strategies, and the initiatives implemented by the Ministerial Committee for Women’s Empowerment, contributing to enhancing women’s presence in decision-making positions, increasing their economic participation, and transforming these efforts into tangible results that directly affect the lives of Jordanian women.
Bani Mustafa noted that the Ministerial Committee for Women’s Empowerment recently launched, in cooperation with the King Abdullah II Center and the Jordanian National Commission for Women, the “Institutional Seal for Supporting and Empowering Women in the Public and Private Sectors,” which is the first initiative at the local and Arab levels to institutionally support women. The initiative aims to enhance women’s economic participation, in line with the Economic Modernization Vision, as a tool to measure the extent to which equality standards are applied and a fair working environment is provided, in addition to its importance for the private sector in enhancing its competitiveness locally and internationally.
She expressed her appreciation for the role played by UN Women in supporting the Kingdom’s efforts in the field of women’s empowerment and enhancing their participation, within the framework of supporting the priorities of the Women’s Empowerment Strategy under the Economic Modernization Vision and the National Strategy for Women. She also stressed the importance of expanding the scope of joint cooperation in a way that supports Jordan’s development priorities.
For their part, the attendees discussed during the meeting the most prominent achievements, the importance of cooperation, and areas of partnership in enhancing the role and empowerment of women in the fields of decent work, transport, health, education, diplomacy and conflict resolution, youth and sports, artificial intelligence, the environment, the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, and Youth, Peace and Security, in addition to supporting efforts aimed at enhancing women’s economic participation and supporting national efforts to increase women’s participation in the labor market through the development of care and childcare policies, as well as matters related to safe and accessible transportation.
