Trump Promotes Idea of Changing New Mexico’s Name to New America

Al-Taj News – US President Donald Trump posted photos on social media on Monday supporting changing the name of the state of New Mexico to (New America), as tense trade negotiations with Mexico intensify.

Trump posted several maps of the United States on Monday in which the state of New Mexico had been renamed New America.

The president said on Sunday that he had received suggestions to change the state’s name and that he liked the idea.

Trump said: “It is a more distinguished and beautiful name for the people of that state, which has tremendous potential… I loved the idea!!!”

Trump’s posts came after his decision last month to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, following the failure of trade negotiations with Canada to reach an agreement.

However, the US federal government does not have the authority to change the name of any state.

New Mexico is currently governed by Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat. She has held the position since January 1, 2019, and was re-elected in 2022.

Grisham said in a post on X that “the name New Mexico is not up for discussion — it has been our name since before the United States existed.”
