Red Texas Cracks .. Democrats Seize Republican Stronghold After 32 Years

Al-Taj News – Republicans suffered a heavy electoral blow in the state of Texas, in one of the most prominent surprises of the 2026 US midterm elections, after Democrats managed to achieve an unprecedented breakthrough in their traditional stronghold, seizing key political positions from the Republican Party, including a Senate seat and the office of governor, in a shift that redrew the political landscape in the second most populous US state.

The results came to put an end to more than three decades of Democratic absence from victories in statewide elections, after Democrat Gina Hinojosa won the governor’s office, defeating Republican Greg Abbott, to become the first Latina woman to hold this position in Texas history, and the first Democratic governor of the state since 1995.

The surprise did not stop there, as Democrat James Talarico seized the Texas seat in the Senate, defeating Republican Ken Paxton, in a victory described by the Associated Press as historic, especially since the last time a Democrat won a Senate seat representing Texas dates back to 1988.
