Jordan and Morocco Sign Agreement on Extradition of Wanted Persons and Enforcement of Judicial Judgments
Al-Taj News – Jordan and Morocco signed on Friday an agreement on the extradition of persons wanted for a crime or for the enforcement of a custodial sentence, in a step that reflects the depth of the fraternal relations between the two countries and their keenness to strengthen legal and judicial cooperation and develop more effective mechanisms to combat crime.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Justice on Saturday, the signing ceremony took place in Morocco. The agreement was signed on behalf of the Jordanian side by Minister of Justice Bassam Al-Talhouni, and on behalf of the Moroccan side by Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi.
The agreement comes as part of Jordan and Morocco’s efforts to develop the existing legal and judicial cooperation framework between the two countries and strengthen cooperation mechanisms in the field of combating crime, including the extradition of persons wanted by justice authorities to face prosecution for a crime, or to serve a custodial sentence issued against them by the judicial authorities of the other party as a result of committing a crime, in accordance with the applicable national legislation and legal regulations in force in both countries.
Following the signing ceremony, Al-Talhouni affirmed that Jordanian-Moroccan relations are deeply rooted historical relations whose foundations were laid by the late His Majesty King Hussein bin Talal, may his soul rest in peace, and His Majesty King Hassan II, may his soul rest in peace.
He continued: “Today, thanks to the high royal directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein and his brother, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this step represents an important milestone in the path of cooperation.”
He added that the agreement represents an important step toward strengthening legal and judicial cooperation between Jordan and Morocco and provides a more effective legal framework for regulating procedures for the extradition of wanted persons, contributing to the achievement of justice, combating crime, and preventing impunity.
Al-Talhouni said that the signing of the agreement reflects the level of distinguished relations between Jordan and Morocco and confirms the two countries’ keenness to expand areas of judicial cooperation and exchange expertise and information.
He noted that strengthening international judicial cooperation has become a necessity in light of the rapid developments in crime, stressing the importance of having clear legal frameworks that regulate cooperation between states and ensure the effectiveness of procedures, while taking into account the rule of law and established legal safeguards.
For his part, Moroccan Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi affirmed the importance of the agreement in strengthening judicial cooperation between Morocco and Jordan, noting that it constitutes a qualitative addition to the framework of bilateral agreements governing legal and judicial cooperation between the two countries.
He noted that the agreement reflects the two countries’ shared will to strengthen coordination in confronting crime in its various forms, contributing to supporting justice efforts and enhancing security and the rule of law.
Under the agreement, the two sides will cooperate in the extradition of persons wanted by justice authorities in accordance with the legal procedures and regulations in force in both countries, while taking into account national legislation and relevant international obligations.
The agreement comes within the framework of the historical and fraternal relations between Jordan and Morocco and their shared commitment to continuing to develop bilateral cooperation in various fields, including the legal and judicial fields, in a manner that serves the interests of both countries and their peoples.
