Al-Taj News – As the campaign for control of the US Congress entered the final weekend before the election, the Trump administration escalated its legal intervention in the Alaska Senate race, at a time when the number of Americans who cast their ballots early approached 50 million, a record number in midterm elections.
On Friday, the Department of Justice accelerated its criminal investigation in Alaska, following reports that aides to a Democratic Senate candidate recruited a retired teacher from a remote fishing village to run for election because he bears the same name as the incumbent Republican senator.
Based on a civil lawsuit that President Donald Trump said he urged to be filed, the department submitted additional motions in an attempt to block the State of Alaska from certifying the Senate election results if incumbent Republican Dan S. Sullivan loses a close race whose ballot also includes independent candidate Daniel J. Sullivan Jr.
The close race in Alaska is viewed as crucial for Democrats if they hope to wrest control of the Senate from Republicans led by Trump in Tuesday’s election.
