Al-Taj News – Water and Irrigation Minister Raed Abu Al-Saud discussed, on Sunday, with the Green Climate Fund’s Regional Director, Thomas Eriksson, and the Fund’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Amjad Al-Mahdi, prospects for joint cooperation, foremost among them supporting the National Carrier Project and preparing water networks to receive desalinated water.
Abu Al-Saud praised the support provided by the Fund for the National Carrier Project, one of the most prominent strategic projects to strengthen water security in Jordan, indicating that the Fund’s contribution amounts to 295 million dollars, including a non-refundable grant of 75 million dollars.
He also welcomed the Fund’s decision to select Jordan to host its new regional office, considering that the step reflects the Kingdom’s standing in supporting climate action and promoting sustainable development in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.
The minister affirmed that the government is working to mobilize international investments and global support to address water challenges and the repercussions of climate change, in a manner consistent with the Economic Modernization Vision and the strategic plan for the water sector, and contributes to raising the efficiency of water supply, ensuring the sustainability of resources, and improving the services provided to citizens.
The meeting discussed the “Water for People and Nature” initiative, launched by the Green Climate Fund in cooperation with the Islamic Development Bank, with an estimated cost of 1.6 billion dollars, targeting 10 countries, including Jordan, with the aim of accelerating investments in water security and climate action in areas most exposed to the repercussions of climate change.
The two sides agreed on the importance of mobilizing financing from the resources of the Fund and the Islamic Development Bank, alongside public- and private-sector partners, to support integrated projects that strengthen water and food security and protect ecosystems.
For his part, Al-Mahdi said that Jordan’s selection to host the new regional office came in recognition of its efforts and commitment to addressing environmental challenges, explaining that Amman will serve as a regional hub for coordinating climate efforts, facilitating access to funding sources, and exchanging expertise and knowledge among the countries of the region.
