Jordan and Iraq Discuss Electricity Prices Amid Plan to Increase Power Exchange to 1,000 Megawatts

Al-Taj News – The National Electric Power Company revealed that Jordan has submitted a new pricing formula for selling electricity to Iraq, based on the actual costs of exported electrical energy, confirming that discussions between the two sides are still ongoing to determine selling prices, contracted quantities, and supply terms.

The company explained that previous meetings between the two sides addressed electricity selling prices to Iraq at a voltage of 400 kilovolts, as part of the discussions aimed at reaching an agreement on prices, quantities, and contracting terms.

Regarding the expansion of the electrical interconnection between the two countries, the company indicated that both sides aspire to achieve synchronized electrical interconnection at a voltage of 400 kilovolts, which requires implementing new reinforcements in the Jordanian and Iraqi electricity transmission networks, with the aim of increasing energy exchange capacities.

It added that completing this work would raise the electrical exchange capacity between the two countries to approximately 1,000 megawatts, compared with the currently available capacity, which ranges between 150 and 200 megawatts.

This comes within the framework of the Jordanian-Iraqi electrical interconnection project, which aims to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector and expand the scope of electricity exchange between the two countries.

Jordan began supplying Iraq’s Rutba area with electricity through the national grid on March 30, 2024, as part of the first phase of the project, with a capacity of approximately 40 megawatts and at a voltage of 132 kilovolts, according to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
