Al-Nawaisah: The 2026 Regulation Sets Conditions for Selecting Government Spokespersons
Al-Taj News – Secretary-General of the Ministry of Government Communication Dr. Zaid Al-Nawaisah said that the Regulation on Media Spokespersons in Ministries, Institutions, and Government Departments for 2026 establishes clear criteria for selecting media spokespersons by requiring the availability of competencies, qualifications, and experience consistent with the Media Spokespersons Competency Framework and the job description card, in addition to passing the required requirements, cognitive and practical tests, assessment tools, and personal interview.
Al-Nawaisah said in an interview with the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that the regulation grants the Ministry of Government Communication a technical role in supervising the work of media spokespersons, directing their efforts, and coordinating communication and the exchange of government information and messages, while the media spokesperson is administratively affiliated with the minister or whoever the minister delegates.
He explained that the regulation establishes a unified institutional framework for organizing the work of media spokespersons and defines their responsibilities, selection requirements, and performance evaluation, in a manner that enhances the professionalism of government communication, coordinates official messages, and ensures a rapid response to issues, developments, and crises.
He added that, under the regulation, the duties of the media spokesperson include preparing communication messages and plans, as well as plans for dealing with crises and developments; issuing or approving statements and press releases; responding to media inquiries; monitoring what is published about the department; and providing the necessary clarifications and responses.
The duties also include representing the department and speaking on its behalf, clarifying its policies, decisions, and programs, coordinating with the relevant units and departments, organizing meetings and press conferences, and managing media communication during emergencies and crises, in a manner that ensures rapid response, accurate information, and consistency of official messages.
He stressed that the regulation enhances integration between the media spokesperson and the unit responsible for media and communication within the department, and requires government entities to provide the personnel, equipment, and technical and logistical support necessary to enable the spokesperson to perform his duties, in addition to ensuring his attendance at committees related to the department’s work, allowing him to remain continuously informed of the issues and files related to its work.
