US Imposes Iran-Related Sanctions on Russian Bank

Al-Taj News –

The U.S. Treasury Department said Monday that the United States had imposed Iran-related sanctions on Russia’s VTB Bank, accusing it of involvement in evading U.S. sanctions imposed on Iran, as part of Washington’s efforts to increase economic pressure on Tehran.

The measure follows sanctions imposed on the bank, Russia’s second-largest lender, in 2022 following the war in Ukraine.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement, “The Treasury Department will continue to target and disrupt entities that provide material, technical, or financial support that enables the Iranian regime to continue its terrorist activities.”

He added, “The Treasury Department will not tolerate any support for the regime and will continue to monitor, expose, and isolate entities supporting Iran.”

Bessent had warned last week that the administration of President Donald Trump would impose sanctions on a major bank as part of continued economic pressure on Tehran to end the war, which has lasted for more than six months.

The United States has imposed a series of economic measures on Iran, targeting oil exports, shipping networks, arms procurement channels, financial intermediaries, digital asset trading platforms, and airlines.
