Trump Administration Lifts Carbon Emissions Restrictions on Power Plants

The Donald Trump administration on Monday lifted restrictions on carbon emissions from coal- and gas-fired power plants, in the latest move in a series of measures aimed at dismantling rules intended to curb climate change.

The measure, announced during a meeting of energy ministers from the Group of 20 in Houston, Texas, not only repeals the carbon emissions reduction rules adopted in 2024 under President Joe Biden, but goes further by proposing to prevent any future legislation in this area.

The energy sector accounts for about a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, which is the largest historical polluter.

Lee Zeldin, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, said in a statement, “For more than 15 years, the Obama and Biden administrations have waged a war on coal with the goal of eliminating a reliable and affordable source of energy.”

He added that “the Trump administration intends to protect the U.S. energy sector and ensure that households continue to have access to affordable electricity.”
