Jordan, China sign MoU to enhance environment, climate change cooperation
AMMAN — The governments of Jordan and China, on the sidelines of His Majesty King Abdullah’s visit to China, have signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in environment and climate change.
The signing took place among several agreements aimed at expanding bilateral partnership across various sectors during the visit, which featured a meeting between King Abdullah and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The MoU establishes a framework for environmental and climate action tailored to the two nations’ socioeconomic conditions, supporting efforts towards sustainable development and a low-carbon green economy transition.
Cooperation areas specified under the agreement include environmental management policies, biodiversity conservation, pollution control, marine environment protection, solid and plastic waste management, climate change mitigation, environmental impact assessment, and public awareness.
The agreement enables both sides to advance practical collaboration through policy and expertise exchange, joint research, expert visits, workshops, training programmes, and joint meetings aimed at capacity building and innovative problem-solving.
Environment Minister Ayman Suleiman said that the MoU represents a “vital” step in enhancing environmental ties, reflecting Jordan’s commitment to broadening international partnerships and leveraging advanced technology to address climate challenges.
Suleiman noted that the ministry aims to translate the agreement into concrete programmes that support national priorities, promote green and circular economies, improve waste management, and protect biodiversity.
He added that the cooperation aligns with the Economic Modernisation Vision to enhance resource efficiency, bolster climate resilience, and fulfil national commitments.
Under the agreement, the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China will oversee implementation and coordinate joint activities through designated representatives.
