Russia Confirms That the Decision to Grant Asylum to Assad Is Final and Irrevocable

Al-Taj News – Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borisenko confirmed that Moscow’s decision to grant former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad political asylum is final and irrevocable, noting that the current authorities in Damascus understand this.

Borisenko said in an interview with the Russian website “RTVI”: “Our Syrian partners know very well that Russia granted Bashar al-Assad political asylum for humanitarian reasons, and the current authorities in Damascus understand that this Russian decision is final and irrevocable.”

Assad was granted political asylum following the collapse of his rule, after armed opposition factions launched a large-scale attack on Syrian army positions in late November 2024. On December 8 of the same year, the factions entered the capital, Damascus, while Assad stepped down from the presidency and left the country.
