Al-Taj News – Members of the U.S. Senate from both the Republican and Democratic parties called on Sunday for President Donald Trump to reverse the diesel supply deal concluded with Russia, considering it contrary to U.S. law, which prohibits the import of Russian energy until Moscow ends its aggression against Ukraine.
Seven senators, including four Republicans and three Democrats, said in a statement that Congress explicitly banned the import of Russian energy in 2022, to prevent the use of the U.S. dollar to finance the war that Russian President Vladimir Putin is waging against Ukraine.
They added that the U.S. administration did not consult Congress regarding the decision and did not provide any explanation for it, despite the law stipulating that it must do so.
The statement read: “The United States should not provide Putin with a financial lifeline at a time when Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians. The administration must immediately redirect its course.”
These criticisms come amid the latest wave of bipartisan objections to Trump’s deal, marking a shift from the almost unanimous support his foreign policy decisions received from Republicans just weeks before the midterm elections scheduled for November 3, which will determine whether the Republican Party retains control of Congress.
