Guterres Succession Race: Greenspan Leads for the Fourth Time

Al-Taj News – Former Vice President of Costa Rica Rebeca Grynspan emerged as the frontrunner in the race for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, after leading the fourth straw poll, according to a diplomatic source.

Four women and three men are competing to succeed Antonio Guterres, whose second term, lasting five years, ends on December 31, 2026.

The process of selecting the Secretary-General is surrounded by uncertainty, as any use of the “veto” by one of the five permanent members of the 15-member Security Council could derail any potential nomination.

The Security Council conducted a round of “straw voting” on Wednesday, during which each candidate received a rating according to three options: “encourage,” “discourage,” or “no opinion.”

According to the diplomatic source, Grynspan led the round with nine “encourage” votes, making this the fourth time she has led the straw poll out of five rounds conducted since July.
