Al-Taj News – Public-sector unions in France called for more than 170 demonstrations across the country on Tuesday to pressure the government two days before the announcement of the 2027 budget bill.
The organizing unions are seeking higher wages and amendments to the budget bill, following Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s announcement earlier this September that the freeze on the index point used to calculate the basic salaries of government employees would be renewed.
Through this mobilization, the unions aim to influence the executive branch’s decisions and send a message to candidates in the upcoming presidential election, coinciding with the beginning of preparations for election campaigns.
Authorities expect between 5,000 and 10,000 firefighters to participate in the protests, following a summer season marked by widespread fires, while the total number of participants in the demonstrations is expected to range between 20,000 and 40,000 people.
In the transportation sector, authorities expect disruptions to rail services to remain limited as a result of the strike.
Pressure on the French economy is increasing as fuel prices rise to record levels and consumer confidence declines, at a time when the government’s ability to provide broad support to households is narrowing due to pressure on public finances and the rising cost of borrowing, according to a Bloomberg Opinion analysis.
