Including Arabs.. Britain Opens a New Pathway for Refugee Resettlement

Al-Taj News – The British government intends to reopen a pathway for refugee resettlement, in a move that Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said is aimed at providing a legal and safe route for the most vulnerable groups.

The decision comes after the British resettlement program was effectively suspended for two years, although it was not officially closed. Mahmood is scheduled to announce its reopening at the Labour Party conference, with an annual cap on the numbers and eligibility limited to those who pass security and criminal background checks.

Under the plan, priority will be given to people identified by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Refugee International Aid Project, with Afghan women and Palestinians expected to account for around a quarter of beneficiaries in the initial phase.

The Home Office expects the numbers to initially be in the hundreds before later rising to a few thousand, while the program will remain subject to an annual cap set by the government. Priority will also be given to people with disabilities and to women and girls considered to be more vulnerable.

Those arriving through this pathway will receive more stable legal status than those who arrive through irregular routes, as they will be granted permanent residency that opens a five-year pathway for them, compared with a system of continuous review that may extend for 20 years for refugees arriving through irregular routes such as small boats.

The plan allows members of the same family to arrive together, but does not include extended families, amid restrictions previously imposed by the government on family reunification.

Alongside the reopening of the resettlement program, the government will launch another pathway allowing charities and nonprofit organizations to sponsor refugees and receive them within local communities. Sponsorship applications are to open next month, while a work sponsorship pathway is expected to be launched in spring 2027.

Mahmood says that combining tighter immigration controls with opening legal routes for the most vulnerable groups could restore public confidence in the asylum system, stressing that Britain remains committed to protecting those fleeing war and persecution, while keeping the system “limited and under control.”

However, refugee organizations and migration experts criticized the British plans over the limited number of people expected to be granted asylum. The Refugee Council said legal pathways can reduce refugees’ reliance on human smugglers, but stressed that their effectiveness requires the reception of thousands of people, not just a few hundred.
