Al-Taj News – Wafai Msaies, head of the Traffic Accidents Association, said that the cost of traffic accidents in Jordan fell to JOD 942 million last year, noting that this is equivalent to approximately 2.8% of gross domestic product.
Msaies explained that the cost of traffic accidents is not limited to material damage to vehicles and property, but also includes treatment and surgery costs in hospitals, insurance expenses, as well as losses related to production.
He stated that insurance costs include paying JOD 20,000 for a person who dies in a traffic accident and JOD 7,500 for a person who sustains a serious injury. He noted that the cost of an accident resulting in human injuries is estimated at a minimum of around JOD 5,000 per person.
Msaies pointed out that the estimation of accident costs is based on the total material and human losses, explaining that the World Health Organization estimates the cost of traffic accidents in countries at approximately 3% of gross domestic product.
