Bolsonaro Leads Brazil Election Results as Vote Counting Nears Completion

Al-Taj News – Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, 45, led the preliminary results of the first round of Brazil’s presidential election, ahead of leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 80, as the vote-counting process neared completion.

According to the preliminary results, Flavio Bolsonaro received 48.47% of the vote, compared with 43.49% for Lula da Silva.

Thirteen candidates are contesting the election, while the main competition is between Lula da Silva and Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is seeking to return the right-wing current to power.

The preliminary results showed differences in the pace of vote counting among the states, as southern states supportive of Bolsonaro announced their results at a faster pace, while vote counting in Lula’s stronghold in the northeast of the country is usually carried out later.

If no candidate receives more than 50% of the valid votes, a second round will be held on October 25 between the two candidates who receive the highest percentages of the vote.
